A bombardment began in earnest. The oversized rifled Parrott cannon on Morris Island were joined by other weaponry on Mossie Island as well as gunboats. The shooting was not completely one-sided though. Gunfire from Ft. Wagner killed Captain G. W. Rodgers, chief of staff to Union Admiral John Dahlgren.

Confederate General John Chambliss

In a cavalry battle on the Charles City Road, on the north side of the James, John Chambliss was killed while leading his men. His body was buried with honor by the Federals, and soon afterward exhumed and delivered to his friends. It was buried in the family graveyard in Emporia, Virginia.
