Union General William T. Sherman declared that John Schofield was senior to John Palmer. An issue had arisen the day before and Palmer had not carried out orders at Utoy Creek. Palmer resigned and returned to Illinois.

US Admiral David Farragut assignment was the seizure of Mobile Bay, Alabama.Farragut was looking forward to this task and he wanted to get started as soon as possible. He sent orders to senior officers at Pensacola requesting the Monitor-class ironclad Tecumseh, and said “I can lose no more days. I must go in day after tomorrow morning at daylight…it is a bad time, but when you do not take fortune at her offer you must take her as you can find her.”
